We the parliamentarians of the Asia Pacific Parliamentary Forum (APPF), gathering in Canberra, Australia, for the 28th Annual Meeting of the APPF under the theme Parliamentary Partnerships for 2020 and Beyond:
Whereas the APPF lost its founder and Honorary President with the death of Yasuhiro Nakasone on 29 November 2019;
Whereas Mr Nakasone actively facilitated the establishment and development of the APPF and laid the ground for its underlying principles of inclusive commitment to constructive, respectful dialogue;
Whereas Mr Nakasone continued to support the organisation for 27 years;
Whereas Mr Nakasone was a member of the Japanese Diet from 1947–2003 and served as the Prime Minister of Japan from 1982–1987; and
Whereas Mr Nakasone played an important role in both Japanese domestic politics and international relations, becoming a leading elder statesman, now, therefore, be it
Resolved, that the Asia-Pacific Parliamentary Forum (APPF), on behalf of its members:
1. Recognises his legacy in creating the APPF as a forum for peaceful and constructive dialogue between the parliaments of the Asia-Pacific region; and
2. Extends its sincerest condolences to Japan, the family of Mr Nakasone, and all APPF Member Countries.
