  • Becoming a member of the APPF

    Under Article 6 of the APPF Rules of Procedure, membership of the APPF is open to national parliaments of sovereign states of the Asia-Pacific region (in particular those of the member nations of ASEAN, APEC, and the PIF) who:

  • have an active interest in promoting dialogue among parliamentarians in the region; and
  • accept the objectives and principles of the APPF as reflected in the 1993 Tokyo Declaration and subsequent declarations and the Rules of Procedure.
  • Under Article 42(d), the Executive Committee shall receive applications for membership in the Forum from each parliament and submit the recommendations to the next Annual Meeting for determination.

    Process

    A national parliament who wishes to become a member of the APPF should write to the President of the APPF. Membership requests should state that:

  • the national parliament is a sovereign state of the Asia-Pacific region and (if relevant) a member of ASEAN, APEC and/or the PIF;
  • the national parliament has an active interest in promoting dialogues among parliamentarians in the region; and
  • the national parliament accepts the objectives and principles of the APPF.
  • The President will forward the request for consideration at the next Executive Committee meeting. If the Executive Committee approves the request, it will then be put to the following Annual Meeting for endorsement.

    The national parliament applying to become a member may wish to ask APPF hosts to invite them as an observer until their membership request is considered by the Annual Meeting.
